Eetu Huhtala

EETU HUHTALA

Eetu Huhtala (b. 1993, Äänekoski) is a sculptor based in Helsinki and working in Kerava. Huhtala’s artistic practice consists of moving mechanical sculptures, large-scale metal sculptures, and multisensory works. His works often appear as everyday objects, devices, and structures drawn from our shared built environment. He borrows from public spaces, building facades, streets, courtyards, playgrounds, and the interiors of private homes. At the core of his practice are objects charged with expectations shaped by everyday life—objects whose form, purpose, and operation are already familiar to the viewer.

In Huhtala’s works, these ordinary objects become connected to personal experiences and, through them, to broader social questions. The works are often flawed in a distinctly human way. Objects fail to fulfill their intended purpose; they repeat singular moments, remain suspended in unresolved situations, or operate contrary to their function. Present are experiences born from the tension between expectation and reality: frustration, powerlessness, stagnation, and exclusion. Yet the recurring failure of these objects also produces a tragicomic tension within the works.

Huhtala graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts Helsinki, in 2021, and in 2023 he was awarded the Young Artist of the Year prize. His work has been presented in solo exhibitions at Jyväskylä Art Museum (Divided Into Two Equal Parts, 2024), Tampere Art Museum (A Pillow Fort & Other Soft Things, 2023), Galleria Sculptor (Unfulfilled, 2021), and Project Room (I sat there, doing nothing, 2020). In addition, his works have been shown in numerous curated group exhibitions in Finland and abroad, including at Galerie Anhava (2025), Kuva/Tila (2025), Rovaniemi Art Museum (2022), the OpenArt Biennale in Örebro, Sweden (2022), and EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art (2021).

Huhtala’s works are included in the collections of Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, HAM – Helsinki Art Museum, Tampere Art Museum, Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation, Saastamoinen Foundation, and Heino Art Foundation. He has completed permanent public artworks in Oulu (A Temporary Stay, 2026) and Helsinki (Another, 2022).
