Last summer, the ventilation system in my paint room broke down. The device had to be opened, dismantled, and cleaned of blockages. The blockage was a tightly packed mass of paint dust, which came off the device’s parts in solid, grayish chunks. I split one of the pieces open. To my surprise, the cross-section revealed a multicolored, dense layering, with the numerous hues I had used over the years standing out distinctly, pure, and bright. I collected all the dirt that came off the device, as I wanted to examine my choices it had captured.
Elina Autio works with sculptural painting. The exhibition at Forum Box is her 12th solo show. The Rest series on display consists of layered sculptures made from corrugated cardboard and metal rods, exploring themes such as ambiguity, accumulation, and support.
