String Quartet Guts!: Joseph Haydn’s Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross
Joseph Haydn’s Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross (German: Die sieben letzten Worte unseres Erlösers am Kreuze ) is one of Joseph Haydn’s best-known spiritual works. It was composed in 1786 for a Good Friday service in the Spanish city of Cádiz.
The work is built around the seven last sentences spoken by Jesus on the cross. Each sentence is given its own, slow and contemplative musical part, framed by a solemn introduction and a powerful finale that depicts the earthquake at the moment of Jesus’ death. The music is deeply atmospheric and invites the listener to pause at the edge of suffering, compassion and hope.
Haydn later arranged the work in several different versions. This concert features the string quartet version of the work, in which its quiet intensity and meditative nature find a particularly intimate and accessible form.
