Venetian Festival Concert – August 20th at 7 PM
In the Nordic countries, Venetian Festivals are celebrations of water, fire, and light: the last glow of summer before the darkness arrives. At the same time, autumn is welcomed back.
The main course of the celebration is Romanian composer George Enescu’s iconic string octet, a masterpiece that Enescu composed at just 19 years of age and which is considered one of the most visionary and demanding works ever written for strings. As an opening course, beginning at 7 PM, Linda Suolahti performs contemporary solo violin music: Confronting the Sky by American composer Jessica Meyer and Pirin by Bulgarian composer Dobrinka Tabakova.
You don’t need to know anything about classical music to dive into this world. Simply follow the sound, the silence, and the changing elements, and let the music carry you from light into darkness, and from the surface of the water into the flames.
