Performing artists info:

Kaarne Fredriksson:
Kaarne Fredriksson (they/them) is a multidisciplinary artist who works within dance, text, and visual arts. As a hip hop and house dancer they approach improvisation with great joy and a deep love for freestyling. Kaarne is also an enthusiastic clubber and finds paths of inspiration and connection from sticky dance floors and their soul-shaking bass lines.

The Global Interdisciplinary Improvisation Ensemble:

The Global Interdisciplinary Improvisation Ensemble embraces students from the different programs at Uniarts Helsinki, to develop skills for creating multidisciplinary performances in real-time. By merging together diverse artistic and cultural backgrounds, as well as different genres and levels of expertise, the ensemble displays a unique way of creating improvised pieces in different line-ups. For this occasion, the ensemble brings along a set full of sonic and performative experiences collected by the interaction of its members during an intensive course-laboratory period conducted by Sergio Castrillón during the end of the summer.

Ilmari Heikinheimo:

Drummer, and composer Ilmari Heikinheimo, also titled the torch bearer of freer Finnish jazz expression, performs his percussion solo project for the first time in Finland, bringing out both melodic and harmonic dimensions including a keen sense of tonal color in his uniquely free-flowing style and dynamic language. In this project, Heikinheimo also uses his full freedom and vision of uniting rubato and polyrhythmical phrasings in their extraordinary but in his hands the most naturally sounding marriage.

Heikinheimo is known for several top bands & projects of the past +10 years (e.g. Raoul Björkenheim, Piirpauke, Juhani Aaltonen, Arild Andersen, Jonas Kullhammar, Jimi Tenor, Jorma Tapio, Edward Vesala’s reborn Sound & Fury, etc).

This event marks the third performance of the HELSINKI EXPERIMENTAL SERIES 2024, a Community Engagement/Action Research/Artistic Research project, that intends to establish an interaction space for members of the different communities of improvisers based or working in Helsinki.
The HES 2024 series is developed and funded in collaboration with: Forum Box Gallery, The Global Music Department of the Sibelius Academy, Interkult (Kassandra ry), and the KONE Foundation.

The research, curatorial, and artistic direction component of this project is run by Sergio Castrillón.
